Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a highly prized tropical edible plant renowned for its intensely aromatic, sword-shaped green leaves. Often referred to as the "vanilla of the East," the foliage is a staple in Southeast Asian cuisine, used to impart a sweet, floral, and grassy flavor to rice dishes, curries, desserts, and beverages. In cultivation, Pandan forms a dense, clumping rosette of upright, arching leaves that typically reaches 2 to 3 feet in height and spread. It thrives in consistently moist, warm, and humid environments, making it an excellent candidate for tropical kitchen gardens, patio containers, or as an indoor culinary houseplant in cooler climates.
