Nandina, commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo or Sacred Bamboo, is an ornamental evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for its finely divided foliage, graceful upright growth, and strong seasonal color. Despite its common name, Nandina is not a true bamboo. New foliage often emerges in bright green or reddish tones, while cooler weather brings out spectacular shades of red, burgundy, and purple. While the species may produce clusters of small white flowers followed by bright red berries, many compact and modern cultivars are prized almost exclusively for their brilliant, year-round foliage color and rarely flower or fruit. Nandina is widely used in foundation plantings, borders, decorative patio containers, mass plantings, and layered landscape gardens where its fine texture and reliable structure provide beautiful contrast.
