Eugenia is a diverse genus of tropical and subtropical evergreen shrubs and small trees valued for their dense foliage, attractive branching, and ornamental character. Typically developing glossy green leaves with striking bronze, copper, or reddish new growth, these plants create an exceptional layered appearance. Depending on the species, Eugenia may also produce small white flowers followed by bright red, purple, or dark-colored berries, most notably the ribbed, cherry-like fruit of the Surinam Cherry. Their ability to combine structured landscape form with tropical foliage and fruiting interest makes them especially useful in warm-climate residential gardens, urban food forests, privacy hedges, and patio containers.
